Every fall, chum salmon migrate from the ocean back to the freshwater habitats where they hatched. They spawn, and then they die. As their bodies decompose, they release vital nutrients back into the freshwater ecosystem. The #PortofTacoma, with assistance from the Puyallup Tribe of Indians, distributes chum carcasses across our habitat sites in an annual tradition known as "chum chucking."
