Trout Run, hatchery waters where Steelhead (Inland Rainbows) come to from Lake Erie. PA Fish and Boat collects the fish and spawns them for the next generation to later be released as fingerlings back into Lake Erie. There, they will spend a couple summers and grow into spawning fish and runs the tributaries. These fish do not die like salmon do after spawning, they will return to the lake again and grow in size. Ever wonder what the process looks like for raising Lake Erie steelhead trout? I had the treat today of tagging along with Don Clayton of the 3-CU Trout Association here in Erie, PA. We toured their raceways, checked out the Fish Commission hatchery in Fairview, and ultimately followed the process down to Trout Run, where mature fish that will be used to start the cycle over again are now returning.
